Where can I buy a hard copy of your book?

Embrace the niche. Don't CHASE the niche. When the market identifies what it likes out of you, go with it. Embrace the steadier income. If that's not the path you're dreaming about, use that revenue stream to work on following that dream path. But don't obsess over finding it, yourself. I think some people also tend to run from the idea of niches because they don't want to be limited. But it doesn't seem to be as big a threat for VO compared to on-stage and on-screen acting. Since customers don't see you and are distracted by the visuals, they're less likely to connect the dots. (Hence the popularity of the "these are all done by the same voice actor" videos.)

You are so correct. I've been a working VO artist for several years. And I've felt for a long time that listeners chose my niche. Hard not to feel limited when you still have want for something else. It's like being type-casted. BUT...Success is success.

I’m coming across this video a year after it was published but I’m really glad I did. I was laid off last year at 48 and decided to go into VO. My channel is documenting the journey from day one. This video is really encouraging and I relate to 100%. Thank you for this.

I recorded my voice on Xbox gamebar, but for some reason, the videos chunky. I'm using Wondershare Filmora to record the audio now and gaming headphones plugged into a Dell G7 on Windows 11 to record my voice but it still sounds like nothing short of crap despite being not choppy. What do I do?

I've worked on 5r for quite some time. 5r is in trouble as a company. Critiquing 5r isn't the same as being anti-5r. People are hurting with the new changes. Preparing for a potential collapse would be a prudent step to take. Be grateful if you are still making money on 5r. The lake is shrinking. Make sure you have other irons in the fire.

Luckily, our clients don't know any of this. Our clients couldn't care less, or even know, about what some "fanboy" said in a group.

It's human nature. Power corrupts. And the power to cancel is no different. Some people get into some "VO religion".

Bill, this is so cool. I have tapped in now and again from Martha’s Vineyard. It am currently recording my book. It’s going quite well. It is the 25th anniversary of the HUNDRED DAY HAUL. Here is my question. How do I format the book for release? Do you record each chapter as one track? I would love to get on the horn with you. I will NEVER give up. By the way great tan. Any advice would be great.

Soooo thankful for this! I finally got some takes I absolutely loved, only to my disappointment to find mouth noises! Devastatingly frustrating. Just when I’d changed my way of talking after podcasting, I see there is SOOO much more.. Will be an interesting practice to not close mouth between words and takes. Can’t to try this:)

ACX has been a platform full of fraud in my experience. I have had more than one book (countless hours) where I was frauded by someone who held auditions, selected and offered me a contract, had me perform the work, exchanged emails in regards to edits, and pushed to have the book published. I found out later it was a fraud by an unknown person/persons attempting to profit from an already published book (that was in writing) that had not yet been claimed on Amazon by the rights holder for the audio rights. Countless wasted hours and heartache. Is it ALL bad? No. Just make sure to always double, triple, and quadruple check who you are dealing with. The contracts mean nothing when you are being frauded through the ACX site. ACX/Audible/Amazon has provided zero support and/or compensation in each case in which I was frauded and it is well documented by countless individuals that this fraud exists, and is not being stopped through diligent security checks, verification of identity, etc.

Just remember in the sessions that 90 minutes of sitting is ALL anybody can stand at one time. The uncomfortableness of sitting will distract and destroy any input!

So good! I think might have watched the same discouraging video as Heather.. stating you have to ramp up and learn practice and pay $20k before getting started 2 years from now.. my heart was beating with frustration.. I took a deep breath went to the beach and then went home to do a bunch of demo recordings on the way to my final one to upload to Fiverr.. exhaling.. we just have to keep going!:) no more VO vampires!

I know who yall are talking about! lol This is a message to all VO Talent: at the end of the day, your business is your business. Do what works for you but if you ever feel short-changed, don't take the job or be on that platform. If it goes against your morals or values, don't take the job. If you can't imagine a certain script is for you, don't take the job. Just do what works for you, know your worth, and keep it pushing.

This was great advice for me. Especially with starting off and being a part of VO groups that shut down DIY demos. It grows doubt that I should proceed at all until I have the money to put down on a pro demo. The negativity is like, "Why bother?"

At the point of asking if they are accepting reels, should you have a polished professional reel done or would the diy dry reels be sufficient?

I'm ony just getting started out--literally re-recording demos to put out today--and I am already seeing a lot of negativity. Thankfully, my coworkers, friends, and wife have all been super supportive. Having your own inner network of positivity helps!

I keep hoping that Bill and others will name actual names but I do understand why they don't. One of these self-anointed "gatekeepers" (his FB group is full of sheep that seem to have a lot of free time to do nothing but troll others) made some intentionally offensive comments about VO talent in my wife's native Third World Country, where those who have just the simplest of any job are eternally grateful- He was poking fun at a word that is commonly used referring to classes, graduates and school groups, etc. He did not just accidentally come across their posts as they don't target English-speaking markets, so he was clearly searching wherever he could for things to b*tch about; Obviously has no VO work to do!

It amazes me how everyone is talking about "The Heat Wave " but nobody seems to notice the countless jets spraying stratospheric aresol injections 24/7 in the sky. The younger generations are so stupid and think it is just water vapors and ice crystals because the TV said so. Do forget the frequencies from HAARP, 5G cell towers, and many other sources. I know this is a voiceover channel, but people had better wake up fast!
